I can’t believe it’s been another large gap between blog posts, what have we been up to? Well that’s a story for another day, but for now I’ve got something exciting to talk about for all our Wellingtonian/Kāpiti Coast followers.
Most of you may or may not know this already, but although I spend a lot of my time during the week in Wellington City, I actually live on the beautiful Kāpiti Coast.
The small town of Ōtaki is located about 5 minutes drive from where I live, and on the 13th of June this year something really exciting was launched! Developed by Nigel Ross, the Ōtaki Yard is the coolest little creation to hit the town in a long long time.
Now more than ever, people are wanting to support and buy locally, and I personally think that the recent events due to Covid-19 have ignited this even more. So after seeing a decrease in shops along the towns main shopping area, Nigel saw an opportunity to bring the community together and drive more business to the area once again. In the long term, he wants to see people coming to the region to visit it as a destination, not just a drive through.
The weekly market is held every Saturday between 8am and 2pm, and is a bustling hub of energy and friendly faces waiting to serve you with a smile. The site can hold up to 100 stalls, where you can find anything from your weekly green groceries, home wear, delicious baking and so much more! The cherry on top? Local singers busking each week and keeping visitors entertained.
PLUS once a month they have a night market as well. Check out their Facebook page for more details- Otaki Yard Markets- Facebook
Even though I’m from the area, I can’t remember the last time that I actually visited Ōtaki, however, in the last month I’ve been up there multiple times to visit the Saturday markets and attend the night markets as well.
So if you’re in the area, make sure you check them out and give their facebook page a like so that you can keep up to date with all of their progress and events.
